Carbide Core bits use a starter bit to locate the hole. After a sufficiently deep grove in hammered in the concrete, the starter bit is removed.
The cup of the core will drill about 3" deep. At that depth, the bit is removed from the hole, the core cracked off and removed, and the bit reinserted to finish the hole.
